Klaipeda

It was such a pleasure spending one month at an artist residency in Lithuania!
Thanks to the partnership between Künstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop and the KCCC in Klaipeda.

My exhibition will continue until the end of August.

KCCC Exhibition hall
Didžioji Vandens str. 2,
LT-91246 Klaipeda, Lithuania

11.00–7.00 Wednesday – Sunday

For her photo projects „Akmuo“ (stone) and "Klaipeda", Birgit Krause has created different series of images taken during her artist residency in Klaipeda. At first she explores her environment, discovers new places, and then sets her focus on the structure of the city. She wants to find out what holds the city of Klaipeda together. Her study portrays the surfaces – concrete facades, vegetation, shapes and textures that make up the city.

Le cose che si vedono in cielo

15 May - 26 July 2015

My Book "Plánētes" at "Le cose che si vedono in cielo", group exhibition,
Fotografia Europea Festival, Reggio Emilia, Italy

fotografiaeuropea.it

Le cose che si vedono in cielo (The Things One Sees in the Sky)

Curated by Ilaria Campioli

Since time immemorial, humans have been fascinated by the sky, the stars, the moon and heavenly bodies. From ancient cosmogonies to the most recent space explorations, human beings have concerned themselves with what they cannot see, touch and experience directly. They are concerned with distance, meaning, and the sublime.

Photography, too, has been interested in the sky since its very beginnings, and in the course of its history has developed increasingly sophisticated equipment to capture images of the cosmos. But just as we are getting more and more sophisticated images from more and more distant places, artists are feeling the need to claim back this space of the imagination. Through a selection of recent photo-books, the exhibit offers a reflection upon the boundary between art and science. The artists reinvent and take apart the archetypal images of the cosmos, and lead us to consider how deeply our vision of nature is influenced by the visual memory built up over the years. Through the series of images featured in these books, the artists create new maps and new visions of the universe.

Also on show are the photographs taken during NASA’s various Apollo missions in the late 60s. These shots, which first brought us images of the planet taken from such an incommensurable distance are, more than we might think, a reflection of the historic times that produced them and show how they have become part of our imagery since then.

Even though the books tell us of an infinitely distant space, in actual fact they lead directly inside ourselves, appealing to our desire to know and to imagine.

Photobook Review - Jörg M. Colberg

cphmag.com

Birgit Krause‘s Plánētes is self-published, and one could take this book as a prime example of what self-publishing can do when it’s done well. Having said that, the book is done with (by?) a place called Raum für Publikation. It’s not entirely obvious to me from their website whether they consider themselves to be a publisher or a workshop helping photographers.

As its name indicates, the book deal with our idea of space and its exploration, an idea that for 99.99% of the population is based on being exposed to pictures or popular-science documentaries (that usually rely heavily on pictures). With the stars (seemingly) being fixed at their positions in the sky, the planets – objects that to the naked eye look like very bright stars – are the odd ones out, given their movements across the night sky.

The word planet is the remnant of this very concept. In the original, longer, form, the Ancient Greeks called them “wandering stars.” They’re all named after Greek/Roman gods/goddesses whose names mostly mean very little to us now, with the exception of Venus and Mars. That they are called planets because they wander across the firmament few people would know. The idea of wandering itself has become strange to us as well. We don’t wander, we hike – everything we do these days needs to have a strict, functional purpose.

What makes Plánētes interesting is that it does not merely contain photographs that look like planets. That would probably be only mildly interesting (keep in mind, though, that I gave up being an astronomer for this, the pickles, so my idea of what’s interesting in astronomy might be very different than yours). Instead, there is a wide range of imagery, all of it clearly connecting our minds to space and its exploration. In addition, there are faint images of the gods that gave the planets their names. Those are easy to miss – the book is subdivided into many section through the use of black pages, some of which have images printed on top, using a very thin layer of varnish.

An initially unassuming book, Plánētes really is the perfect vehicle for this body of work. The edition size is very small (there now is a second edition, equally small), you might want to hurry if you want to get a copy.

Photobook Review - Arteo

art-eo.com

“I am capturing the essence of life”,
“I’m waiting, waiting and observing, only to capture the perfect decisive moment”,
“I develop a relationship with my models in order to get an access to the intimate, genuine and natural feelings”

So are typical artistic statements populating the Internet. I never felt acquainted with such a philosophy of photographing the world I live in… Simply because I don’t think I could.
In many regards the world I live in is very unreal and I have a feeling it has always been like this, so why on earth should I pretend I can communicate the REAL when I, myself, barely have an access to it!? It’s just that the dreamscapes we navigate has so much to offer!
What does this mean? Let’s mince it through an example and jump back in time:
Edouard is 8, lives in a crappy building “offered” to the police army families in a 4000 souls city that hasn’t much to offer but a few sport clubs, school and forests.
But it doesn’t matter because for Edouard and his friends, the courtyard is just the best playground on earth. There, they re-enact together sceneries from “The ghostbusters”, they climb trees in what looks like a jungle… When coming back home, main activities consist of watching cartoons, playing ATARI games…Crying sometimes? Sure, most often comedy tho, merely a child attempt for manipulation.
All in all not much Real in there… And I continue today… Still hardly seeing anything else than what I want to see, understand else than what seems to be the most satisfying explanation to me, constantly obscuring the unpleasing details. I once read somewhere that the difference of what our eyes capture and what our brains offer to our consciousness is phenomenal, a 80/20 ratio, 20% standing for what the eye actually captures… All the blanks being filled with assumptions or stereotypes to save a bit of mental energy… Dreams…

In this light why wouldn’t we have a right to communicate these through photography? After all painters have been doing so for quite a couple of centuries now right?! In the mind of Mr. everyone, photography is much attached to the realm of the real tho. It records and displays what has been, fixes for display a few rays of light.
Now don’t misunderstand me, I m pretty aware that artist photographers have been exploring this path for a while now. Whether we are photographers or not, we do see the world through our own lense and our own set of filters. Newly appointed parents may see the whole world as a threat for their baby, astrology enthusiasts may look at every corners for the signs of their ephemerides…

Birgit Krause is looking for signs of the stars in the everyday physical manifestations of light.
In her book “planètes”, she holds our hand, switches the light off and shows us the stars shining under our beds, in our own private spheres and I find this choice for a topic very clever.
The “space” subject holds very antinomian charges. Space is poetry, a dreamscape, a source of fantasy, a projection, a source of fascination, fears, incomprehension, the temple of god… But also the land of physics, sciences, exploration, theories and experimentations, pragmatism.
“Space” as a subject, supports very well the photography medium in the sense it is by nature, both very rational (camera records light through a lense onto a sensible surface) and irrational (with a photograph you can tell stories, express fantasies, depict surrealist ideas).

Birgit Krause creates with “planètes” a 26 photographs project (+5 illustrations) that tells us more about our relationship with the photographic medium than any other book.
Astrophysicists points telescopes at the sky, she points a camera at your mind.

The book is intriguing, fun, beautifully designed and is getting rare… A piece of advice? Run to 25books (Berlin) or visit their webshop and treat yourself

Photobook Review - Katherine Oktober Mathews - GUP

gupmagazine.com

German photographer Birgit Krause photographs the environments and atmospheres of seemingly distant planets and universes for her book Plánētes. While the images are actually of contemporary Earthly objects and places, her photographs, which dance between scientific and artistic styles, don’t reveal much in terms of actual subject matter. Some images offer ethereal views of distant galaxies while others appear to show the cold lunar surface.

The title ‘Plánētes’ is derived from the Greek word for ‘roamers’ or ‘wanderers’, and through it, she makes the case that we are taking a wandering tour of the universe. While the photos of planets and stars are printed on white papers, they are interspersed with stark, matte black papers, standing in for the great spaces of universal nothingness, the long landscape views along our walk. Printed nearly invisibly onto some of those black pages are also portraits Krause has taken of statues of Greek gods. The experience is then, as she expressed succinctly to GUP, “You take a walk through the cosmos, and sometimes you see a god.”

Plánētes is a self-published book, and is actually the diploma project of Krause’s photographic studies at Ostkreuzschule in Berlin. Developed in collaboration with book designer Björn Schmidt, however, the finished product is manicured with perfectionist detail, with excellent decisions regarding layout and stylistic elements, and a fine choice of materials, ultimately expressing a strong command of the medium of photobook-making.

Photobook Review - Hannes Wanderer - 25books

25books.com

COSMIC LATTE.

What´s the color of the universe? Scientists have investigated the question, reached out several billion light years into space and have studied 200,000 galaxies. The result: The universe is light beige. Or just COSMIC LATTE.

A good color to paint complete housing estates

But Birgit Krause stayed on earth for her PLANETES. Her earthly visions of time and space are therefore not beige but deep, black and mysterious. What I see exactly, I do not know, but I easily follow on this weightless trip, encounter foreign objects and fascinating lights, float through unknown territory - towards the sun. And when it gets really dark, just black, then here and there a good spirit from ancient times appears.

A cosmos of desires.

Three attempts I have made to present this beautifully designed little book. But before I was ready, each time all copies were already sold. With the second edition of again only 100 signed and numbered copies I finally have the opportunity, to recommend it here at 25books. Very much actually.
